Placement Tests
Placement Tests
If you already have previous knowledge of a language, you should take a placement test. The placement tests take place at the beginning of each semester, shortly before the start of the start of teaching term (Vorlesungszeit). You can find the dates below.
- The tests have different formats, but they are all computer-based.
- The tests take place in the PC pools in the Viadrina Language Centre (seminar building, August-Bebel-Str. 12).
- In order to take the test, you’ll need your matriculation number, which can be found on your student ID card.
- Depending on the test format, you’ll normally receive the result immediately, or in a good time before the end of the course registration period.
- The result is valid for two semesters. After that, you’ll need to take the test again if you haven’t taken a course at your level at the Viadrina Language Centre by then.

Placement tests
Late Placement tests
The possibility to take language courses depends on whether spare places are left after the end of the regular course allocation process. So it is always an advantage to take the first (regular) test.
In the winter semester 2025/26, we are offering just one day on which late placement tests can be taken:
Monday, October 13, 2025 – from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM
The tests will take place at the Language Centre in AB 308.
Placement tests for all languages can be taken at any time during the time slot mentioned above.
Important: Tests must be started and completed within the designated time frames.
Test durations vary – please plan accordingly to ensure you have enough time to complete them!
FAQ
The placement test isn’t always obligatory. You don’t have to take a placement test if:
- you have no previous knowledge of the language. In this case, you can register for any A1 course in viaCampus straight away.
- you have already successfully completed a semester-long language course or an intensive course at the Viadrina. In this case, please register directly for the next level.
- you already have an external language certificate. In this case, you must contact the respective language department for further information.
- .
If you’re already enrolled at the university, you don’t need to register separately. Our placement tests are free and open to all registered students. Make sure you check all the information in advance. Some tests have rolling start times whereas others have fixed start times.
If you don’t have a matriculation number yet, please contact the appropriate language department.
You can take part in all placement tests. The only limit is your time.
You can take all tests with just one account:
Your matriculation number is also your login.
Your date of birth is also your password
Be sure to enter your date of birth in the correct form: DD.MM.YYYY - example: 01.12.2000 | please don't forget the dots!
This account gives you access to the platform containing our placement tests. After logging in, you’ll need an access key for the specific test – you will get this on the day in the test room.
If you don't have a matriculation number yet, please contact the appropriate language department.
You’ll receive feedback with your result immediately after the test. Our colleagues then enter the results in viaCampus. Depending on the number of candidates, your result may only be visible on the next working day. Once your results have been entered, you can register for the relevant courses immediately.
The placement tests aren’t pass or fail. The tests are there to support you: they help you to correctly assess your language skills so that you can register for the right course.
At the end of each test, you will receive feedback with your result.
