AG6: Heritage languages

Section Chairs: Nicola Jordan
Ruhr-Universität Bochum
Dr. Sylvie Bordaux
Europa Universität Viadrina

In the course of the debate about multilingualism and in light of the challenges of migration for Europe, the speakers of heritage languages have become more of a focus at university language centers in recent years. In many places, programs and courses were developed specifically for this target group. Depending on the region, these were mostly for languages like Arabic, Polish, Russian and Turkish. The workgroup “heritage languages” would like to offer a forum to all those concerned with research and practice involving heritage languages and speakers of heritage languages at the university.

The following topics and issues (amongst others) might be adressed:

  • Concepts for programs for heritage languages
  • Heritage languages   at the interface between school and university
  • Needs, motivation and perspectives from and for heritage language speakers
  • Heritage language speakers and foreign languages learners-Heterogeneity and linguistic competencies
  • Heritage languages as individual and societal resources
  • Identity and interculturality
  • Intercomprehension and transfer
